Kalundborg Symbiosis – a best practice example on how a public-private partnership creates surplus for the companies involved, the environment and the local community

In a corner of West Zealand in Denmark lies the city of Kalundborg — and it’s here Kalundborg Symbiosis has shared the surplus of excess resources for more than 50 years through a symbiotic and circular approach to industry and production.

Here, the city’s large industrial companies work together across sectors to share excess energy, water, and materials, so less goes to waste.

As public and private companies are physically connected, one company’s surplus of resources adds value to another. Today, more than 20 different streams of excess resources flow between the companies, creating a symbiosis of resource exchange, adding more resilience and profit to the partners.  The Symbiosis model also creates another surplus — the trust and power of innovation within the community. It benefits the people such as employees, students, and researchers and the climate. We are working together to reduce thousands of tons of CO2 emissions each year.

Lisbeth has a Masters in Arts (MA), a Master in Public Management and is an certified coach. Lisbeth has worked with development within sustainable business solutions and public-private partnerships for many years and has worked for Kalundborg Symbiosis since 2012.

Symbiosis, a driver for sustainable development? A brief reflection and some inspirational examples of how symbiosis development is connected to topics discussed at the COP27

Industrial symbiosis is often described as a process where wastes or by-products from one industry become resources for other industrial processes. But often the effects of symbiotic development reach across sectors and perspectives, from industrial to urban/rural development and developing different types of system innovations in the context where the symbiosis is created.

In this presentation Rickard will reflect and give a few inspirational examples on how industrial symbiosis can create pathways towards sustainable development and discuss what other values besides the reduction of climate emissions symbiotic developments can lead to.

The presentation will be connected to recent and current events within the EU and globally, e.g. the volatile market of natural gas in Europe, the development of a hydrogen infrastructure in the northern parts of Sweden, and the COP27 held in Egypt in November.

Rickard is a senior researcher at RISE working on strategic development of initiatives concerning efficient use of resources and energy in society, with a focus on integrating different system perspectives.

He is currently coordinating work within RISE in the field of symbiosis, among others the EU-project CORALIS and the establishment of a Swedish national resource centre for industrial and urban symbiosis.

The end

Industrial Symbiosis is a concept aiming to improve resource efficiency through local/regional collaboration. It is a process where someone's waste or by-products of an industry or industrial process become raw materials for another. Industrial Symbiosis brings companies together in innovative collaborations and allows materials to be used in a more sustainable way, as well as contributes to the creation of a circular economy.
